BET Awards Show…..Wonderful

It is with a sigh of pleasure and relief that I report on the Fantastic BET Awards Show that I watched last night, June 24, 2008.  As a black female, I hate to say it, but I must.  I usually look forward to “our” awards shows with anticipation tinged with just a touch of apprehension.  I always hope and pray that there will be no fighting, over-the-top insults, nor shooting.

Well last night’s show was wonderful!  Some of my favorites…..Alicia Keyes gave a wonderful performance, and then did a blast from the past singing with old school girl groups like SWV, En Vogue and TLC.  It was great to see these ladies still singing and sounding as good as ever.  And it was like a love fest with them all cheering each other on, with no egos getting in the way.

The Rev. Al Green was given a lifetime achievement award.  He had great tributes of his own music sung to him, especially good were Anthony Hamilton and Maxwell (the epitome of cool).   Then of course Rev. Green took the stage and brought the house down with a mixture of suave R & B Soul and Gospel moaning.

The show bridged the generation gap with everything from performances by young Keisha Cole and Rihanna to a touching award and speech to Quincy Jones who related how happy he was to be up on stage after just celebrating his 75 birthday.  You go Quincy!!!!  Chris Brown and Ciara’s dance interlude…….WOW!!!!   All in all, it was a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable show.  The only thing I missed was that it was the only awards show I’ve seen in years without at least three awards going to my girl Beyonce…..oh well.
